First Athletics Gold Takes India To Equal Its Best Ever Medals Haul At CWG

Commonwealth Games 2010 Update : Krishna Poonia, Indian discus thrower created history by winning first Commonwealth Gold in the history of the Games. The Indian contingent of Poonia, Harwant Kaur and Seema Antil bagged the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively creating a clean sweep of the medals. Poonia is the only Indian woman athlete to win a Gold in any Track & field events and second only after Milkha Singh.

In shooting, Tejaswini Sawant and Meena Kumari, the rifle shooters won the bronze in women's 50 meters rifle event.

In boxing, boxers Suranjoy Singh (52kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Paramjit Samota (+91kg) won their semi final bouts and have entered the final round. However, the whole boxing contingent was a tad bit disappointed with hot favourite Vijender Singh losing out his bout on warnings by the referee which led to the Indian team lodging a protest. The other semifinalists Amandeep Singh (49kg), Asian champion Jai Bhagwan (60kg) and Dilbag Singh (69kg) also had to be content with bronze medal.

In Table Tennis, Sharath Kamal, A Amalraj and Soumyadeep Roy qualified for quarter final round. However the Indian women's team couldn't reach the round of eight and crashed out.

Finally there was something to cheer in the event of Squash when mixed doubles pair of Joshna Chinnappa and Saurav Ghosal entered the quarter finals. The Indian duo topped the Group D and hence was awarded a bye to reach the round of eight. However it's going to be tough time for them as they meet third seeded Malaysian pair of Nicold David and Ong Beng Hee next.

In Badminton, Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap defeated fourth seeded Malaysian Muhammad Hafiz Hasim 19-21, 21-19, 21-16 in the quarter final match. It was a performance by the Indian who is ranked much below the Malaysian counterpart. Saina Nehwal also entered quarterfinals by defeating Nigerian Caroline Black by 21-0, 21-2.
