CWG Update: Saina Nehwal won India her 38th Gold by winning her Womens’ Singles in Badminton. Her win ensured that India regained the 2nd spot in the overall standings.

Khel Ratna awardee Saina Nehwal was playing two finals today. One was her finals for the Womens’ Singles in Badminton and the other was for India’s final Gold medal tally.
India started their day in the #3 spot with 36 Gold medals as compared to England’s 37. A surprise victory for India in Badminton doubles equaled the medal tally to 36. However, India needed to beat the medal tally in order to finish 2nd on the overall standings.
This made Saina Nehwal’s final match against Mew Choo Wang (of Malaysia) even more critical. Not only was her Gold medal at stake, but also India’s overall standings.
Saina showed her mettle by beating the Malaysian shuttler 19-21, 23-21, 21-23 which was a remarkable comeback after being beaten in the first set of the game.
Her win won India their 38th Gold and subsequently propelled them to the second spot in the overall ranking of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
