An inspired bowling performance of 5-23 by skipper Shahid Afridi helped Pakistan defend a meagre total of 184 and beat Canada by 46 runs in a Group A match played at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first but got off to a bad start as they lost their openers Mohammad Hafeez (11) and Ahmed Shehzad (12) to Henry Osinde and Harvir Baidwan respectively in the first ten overs.
Baidwan then trapped Younis Khan Leg before wicket for six and in 13th over Rizwan Cheema had Kamran Akmal (16) caught at backward point to reduce Pakistan to 67-4.
Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq then steadied the ship as they added 73 crucial runs off 19.2 overs for the fifth wicket. But just when it seemed everything was going right for Pakistan, disaster struck as Balaji Rao trapped Akmal leg before wicket two runs short of his half-century.
Misbah and Shahid Afridi then added 25 runs for the sixth wicket but in the 39th over, Misbah (37) was back in the pavilion, as he edged a wide delivery to keeper Ashish Bagai off Balaji Rao. Canada were on top by this time and they did not take long to finish off the Pakistan innings taking the last four wickets for just three runs.
Rizwan Cheema removed Afridi was for 20, while Jimmy Hansra removed Abdul Razzaq (8) trapping him leg before wicket and Wahab Riaz (0) caught by Balaji Rao in the 42nd over.
Baidwan then cleaned up Saeed Ajmal to end Pakistan innings on 184. Baidwan was the pick of the bowlers for Canada with figures of 3-35.
In reply, Canada got off to a bad start as openers Ruvindu Gunasekera was trapped leg before wicket for only eight by Umar Gul, while his opening partner Nitish Kumar was cleaned up by Razzaq for two. A cautious approach by Zubin Surkari and Bagai saw them reach 44 in the 18th over but Afridi struck the crucial blow when he had Bagai trapped leg before wicket for 16.
Surkari and Hansra resurrected the innings as they added 60 runs for the fourth wicket in 16 odd overs to take Canada past 100. But with the score on 104 there was a huge collapse as Ajmal had Surkari (27) trapped leg before wicket and then it was all Afridi as he ripped through the lower order taking four wickets. Rizwan Cheema (four) was the first to depart as he was cleaned up trying a slog-sweep, while Hansra and Baidwan too were cleaned up off successive deliveries by the skipper. Afridi got his fifth wicket of the evening in form of Tyson Gordon (9), who was brilliantly caught by Wahab Riaz.
The skipper had an outstanding match as he showed some brilliance in the field too when he had Balaji run out with a direct hit for one. Wahab Riaz then finished off the Canada innings in style when he cleaned up Osinde for a duck as Canada were bowled out for 138.
Shahid Afridi was named the man of the match for his brilliant bowling performance of 5 for 23.
Result: Pakistan won by 46 runs
Scores: Pakistan: 184/10
Canada: 138/10
Man of the Match: Shahid Afridi
