Taking a leaf out of the high scoring, exciting, entertaining games of the premier league play offs on staurday night, this game raised the bar even further, in what was a battle between two highly talented managers in the form of David Moyers of Everton and Martin o Neil in a super Sunday match at Villa Park.
The match ended at 3 -3, in what was a gripping, nail biting, fitting show by both the teams, at the end of which neither of them deserved to lose. Fellani,
Both the managers bore a disappointed look at the end of the match, probably for different reasons but also for failing to score a point over each other, especially Aston Villa who had over the last weekend put up a spirited show at Old Trafford and have lost 17 points over Arsenal in the last few months.
The first part of the 1st half saw a surprising but a thoroughly dominated show by the Everton forwards who were putting up one of their most spirited and lively performances of the season, something they have not been recognized for so far.
Phil Neville fired a shot which was just pushed over the bar, by Brad Friedel, and Villa were already on the back foot trying to absorb all the pressure being exerted by the Everton team.
Fellani scored in the 19th minute for Everton, with a superbly crafted move which saw around seven touches within the 6 yard Villa box, and Everton were ahead 1 – 0.
Everton soon followed with another cracking shot from Pennar in the 25th minute, which was marginally off the target.
Through a 32nd miunte corner kick, Everton was leading 2 -0, which after a lot of pushing within the penalty box, saw Tim Cahill, managing to get two touches on the ball and scoring with a deft header, even in the presence of the six feet tall Aston defenders, disappointing throughout the match.
This was probably a wakeup call for the Villa team, who have one of the most dismal home record of all the seasons this time, and managed to pull one back through a John Carew shot, who scored his 13th goal this season and the score read 2 -1 in favour of Everton at half time.
There was no let up in action over the break and Everton stretched the lead further through a Steven Pennar kick placed exactly in the corner over a hapless Brad Friedel and Everton lead 3 -1.
That was all Everton managed in the match, because it was all Aston Villa over the remainder of the match, and the Villa captain, Gareth Barry stood up and scored off a free kick in the 58th miunte, making it 3-2 for Villa.
The intensity of the match also caught up with the referee, who was a bit inconsistent over some of the decisions and fouls being awarded to both the teams. Ashley Young has found a new acronym for him of a pseudo with several diving attempts in the goal box, somewhat similar to what Cristiano Ronaldo does, and was successful on few accounts to win referrals for his team.
Another one of the controversial and questionable decisions saw a penalty being awarded to Aston Villa in the 67th minute over a foul on David Milner by Lescott. Gareth Barry stepped forward once again and scored off the spot and it was 3-3 with 20 minutes to play.
Both the teams played to the finish now, and the young Delfounso came tantalizingly close on two accounts in the dying moments of the match for Aston Villa, but alas it was not meant to be and that’s how it stayed at the end of it.
It was a fitting end to an exuberating weekend in the Barclays Premier League which has seen as many as 37 goals being scored and with 2 more league games still remaining, has truly been a reflection of what BPL stands for .
Definitely not a match to be missed if you are an ardent football lover, and a diehard Everton fan.
