Referees can win matches…

iSporter Suraj Kori, also an avid Chelsea supporter is disappointed at last night's loss to Man City and believes the referee had a big hand in Man City win. Is it the truth or is he just another disappointed fan?

Just as in cricket ‘catches can win matches’, in football now a days even ‘referees can win matches’. Everyone knows football is a game with same number of players on both the sides. But this didn’t happen in yesterday’s clash between Manchester City and Chelsea. Man City came on the ground with a 12th player- the referee Howard Webb, who made sure that Chelsea didn’t keep the ball with them for a long period of time.

To what extent the referee played biased would be evident from the fact that Chelsea got 6 yellow cards- John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, Juliano Belletti, Branislav Ivanovic, Deco and Ashley Cole. Out of these hardly one player deserved to be booked. Belletti slided in for a ball and was booked for this just because he was on his feet soon. When two players slide you will have collision and how can you stop that. But who will make this understand to the referee.

Chelsea scored the opening goal in the 8th minute from an Adebayor own goal. Emmanuel Adebayor scored again just before the end of first half, this time on the right end, from a ball that deflected through the hands of Man City player Michael Richards. It was visible to everyone that the ball did hit the hands of Richards but the referee didn’t notice it. He didn’t even wait for a second to confirm it from the linesman.

Chelsea are the strongest team this season but there is not much you can do when the referee gives all the decisions against you. It is highly difficult for the players to keep their cool when these things happen.

The referee however gave a penalty to Chelsea for a challenge on Didier Drogba which Chelsea missed. When everything goes against you know that it is not your day.

This 2-1 loss to Man City reduces the lead of Chelsea to just 2 points over reigning champions Manchester United. Had the referee given some correct decisions the result would have definitely been different.

I am confident enough that Chelsea would make up for this loss soon and maintain their position at the top of the table. Chelsea is the best team and will remain the best no matter how many referees play against them.

yeah I saw the game and was disappointed with the decisions even though I dont support either of the teams.
Join the debate 'Hand of Henry'... I think its time for a 4th referee in front of a 'video-replay' screen and with authority to over rule the on-ground referee decision.

Aaaahh!! The team which usually enters with 12 players has been beaten at their own game! I loved it, though i didn't see the match! Anyways, yo are not talking about the fact that Chelsea should have never got a corner through which they scored. It went off Ashley Cole. "Clearly that's a goal kick", said Andy Grey, who was commentating, and I am sure you saw it with your own eyes!!

I didn't see the match, but its unfair to criticize the referees every time a team loses. Referees are human and will make mistakes, it's a part of the game. If a team cannot score enough goal and not even score from a penalty, then why blame the referee?

I do agree with u you asif, but this happens everytime with CHELSEA! 6 yellow cards for CHELSEA where as only 1 yellow card for MAN CITY, this ratio itself shows what i want to say and that my point is right.
