Football fanatic Karan Shah reviews the West Ham vs Spurs game played at Upton Park on Sunday.

aaronlennonSpurs made an emphatic beginning this season by beating Liverpool in their first game, and White Hart Lane had more reason to rejoice as they beat West Ham at Upton Park by 2-1.The irony however, was that Spurs barely deserved the win,

The first half started with amazing energy and physical battles between both the teams. However the all important goal was missing, as both teams seemed to lose possession in the final third. Luka Modric and Tom Huddlestone hit a powerful long range shots only to see them being saved by the keeper. Spurs almost scored when Modric’s cross was helped onto the crossbar by Ledley King.On the other end, Carlton Cole was somewhat troubling Bassong and King; however his lack of a predatory instinct was more than evident on a lot of occasions. West Ham manager, Gianfranco Zola surely would want to fill that void as there is less than a week left for the transfer window to shut. The first half ended with no goals as both teams were locked in a midfield battle.

The second half began with quite a bang for Carlton Cole with a goal and an unwanted assist. He scored with an unstoppable volley to bring the score to 1-0 for the Hammers. It was a beautiful goal that lifted the spirits of the supporters and more importantly would have definitely impressed England manager Fabio Capello. But that was not to be, as he did something extremely embarrassing 54 minutes into the game. Picking up possession on the half line, Cole attempted a back pass which went horribly wrong and instead of picking up any of his defenders, he picked up Defoe, who more than willingly took the chance and slotted the ball in the back of the net. Zola was left fuming with Cole’s inexplicable mishap. West Ham tried to commit more players to attack and were obviously the better team on the pitch, however, the final score line was surely not going to be in their favour as the finishing move arrived from Lennon who coolly hit a fierce low shot in to the corner ten minutes from time. Spurs managed to keep the Hammers at bay for the remaining minutes with the final score being West Ham 1-2 Tottenham.

It was quite a historic win for Spurs as they hadn’t managed to win their first three games since the last 15 years, and the mood seems to be quite upbeat for the upcoming season at White Hart Lane!
