Manchester United went top of the Barclays Premier League table making a rather emphatic statement to their title rivals as Wayne Rooney netted four goals to help them beat Hull City. iSporter Chirag Mansukhani brings the action.

United were on the attack form the word go, and were rewarded for all the early pressure they put on the Hull City goal when Rooney put them ahead after just seven minutes of a rebound of Paul Scholes’ initial effort.
United had several chances throughout the first half as they continued to attack the Hull City goal. It has to be said that while they deserved to be on top they could have been left to rue their missed opportunities in the first half as both Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen let some golden chances go begging.
Come the second half and it was the same old story with United attacking again while Hull City tried to strike on the counter attack. Another missed opportunity by Park was followed by a shot on goal from Hull City striker Ghilas. Ghilas a former Celta Vigo player almost had the Tigers’ level but his shot drifted just wide of Edwin Van der Sar in the United goal.
However, it was not to be as Rooney smashed in 3 goals in the last 7 minutes of the game ensuring that United sat pretty at the top of the table. Also worth a mention was a commendable performance by Nani who was simply splendid on the night with some eye catching crosses into the Hull City box. Nani who has often been criticized for not showing the form he was expected to when he was signed from Sporting Lisbon for 17 million pounds left little to the imagination as he showed his class throughout the match with an amazing performance showing his manager and the fans alike, his true worth. Paul Scholes also had another cracker of a game as most of Uniteds’ plays were rooted through the veteran midfielder.
This match saw the return of Rio Ferdinand to the side after 3 months on the sidelines due to injury. The only shortcoming of the night if any, would be the fact that Michael Owen failed to find the net despite some glorious opportunities. All the burden was borne by arguably one of the best talisman United have ever had in Wayne Rooney, who did not fail to impress with his four goals. Sir Alex Ferguson has said that he would like to rest Wayne Rooney if possible but with all the goals seemingly coming from his and only his boot it is doubtful that he will get that chance anytime soon.
All in all it was a magical night at Old Trafford with a grand performance all round leaving a strong statement about their intentions and their hopes of a record fourth consecutive title. The message is loud and clear “The Red Devils are coming!”.
