Liverpool vs Chelsea: Kop’s Mammoth Task – This tie gets me all jittery just thinking about it as Liverpool will attempt to recreate the 2005 miracle of Istanbul. Pool have a colossal task ahead of them AND all the tools to make it happen, only the naive would rule out the possibility. They have their Captain Marvel Stevie G who was rested for Blackburn’s 4-0 thrashing on the weekend. They have one of the world’s best strikers in Fernando Torres and a defensive line that on most occasions has been pretty good.
Chelsea will be without Captain John Terry so Alex will line up alongside comeback king Ricardo Carvalho in the centre of defence. His form and ability to deal with the “Flying Fernando” after a long injury break will the crucial to the outcome of this game tonight.
With Guss Hiddink’s technical strategizing and Essien man marking Gerrard, I somehow cannot bring myself to predict a Liverpool win (though I am secretly hoping for it). I see a few goals in this tie but predict Chelsea going through on superior goal difference. 2-2 the final score.
Barcelona vs Bayern Munich: A club friendly – After Bayern’s 4-0 thumping by the Catalans at Nou Camp, today this fixture travels to the Allianz Arena in Germany. With last Tuesday’s disappointing exchange of jerseys between countrymen Thiery Henry and Franc Ribéry at half time its self, I can only imagine what the teams morale must be!
To make matters worse, Yesterday Bayern captain Van Bommel told the Spanish radio station RAC1 that Ribéry wants to join tonight's opponents. "Franck has told me he wants to play for Barcelona," said the Dutchman, himself a former midfielder with the Camp Nou club. Naturally the announcement could not have possibly come at a worse time.
Messi, Henry and Eto are going to run riot at the Allianz Arena tonight. 3-1 to the Spaniards is how I think this will end.
Manchester United vs FC Porto: MUFC to make history? – United travel to Portugal for their must win tie in this fixture tomorrow night. No English team has won at the Estádio do Dragão in European competition, but if United are to make their semifinal berth then they must. I predict this one to be a cracker as undoubtedly, the red devils will go for it with everything they’ve got! At the same time Porto will be deadly on the counter and perhaps score the way they did at Old Trafford.
With boy wonder Federico Macheda making a habit out of coming of the bench to score a late winner, I see the 17 year old Italian feature and make contribution in this game. The Hulk will cause serious trouble to the United back four I somehow don’t feel Manchester United will be able to undo the damage they have caused themselves at home. With Ferdinand a doubt and no Berbatov I predict the Portuguese will play out a 1-1 draw and go through on away goals.
Arsenal vs Villareal: Mind Games – Villareal striker Giuseppe Rossi, a £6million buy from United 18 months ago said “I know all about playing Arsenal from my time at United and I’m sure their fans will be booing me because of that. But that’s no problem to me because when I get stick, I go even harder to get a goal.“ He has scored 23 goals in just 50 games for Villarreal and was also a handful in the 1-1 first-leg draw with the Gunners in Spain. With their Captain Marcos Senna injured Rossi will play a pivotal role. Though Rossi, Pires and team will really need to lift themselves from their terrible domestic form if they want to come out on top at the Emirates.
Arsenal have their own problems with veteran William Gallas, and Swiss defender Johan Djourou picking up a medial ligament and knee injury respectively. The Gunners have serious problems in central defense with ex-United man Silvestre and Kolo Toure filling in. Gibbs will play for Clichy on the left as he looks to have picked up a knock as well. They will also miss 1st choice keeper Alumina with a minor ankle injury.
Arsenal captain Fabregas is back and the boys in red and white look leathal when in offence. They put four past Wigan on the weekend and have not lost in the last three months; I predict the Gunners will go through on superior goal difference by scoring twice tomorrow night. Though I still see Wenger’s defense making an error and conceding one, 2-1 to the Gunners my final prediction.
