Five Star Gunners, Chelsea and Real Madrid Cruise In The Champions League

UEFA Champions League Update : Tuesday night's Champions League encounters saw the big guns dominate apart from AC Milan who were up against Real Madrid.  Arsenal demolished Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 at home; Chelsea beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 away from home, Real Madrid hammer AC Milan 2-0 at the home.

Arsenal continued their excellent run in the Champions League as they thumped Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 at the Emirates.

The match saw the return of their inspiring captain Cesc Fabregas after a month long injury lay-off.

Arsenal started the match brightly and soon took the lead in the 19th minute as a bad mistake by the goalkeeper, who spilt the ball, allowed Alex Song to deflect the ball into the net from inside the box.

Arsenal doubled their lead in the 41st minute through Samir Nasri after a cross met the in-form Frenchman who fired home from a close range.

The Gunners won a penalty in the 59th minute of the game when defender Johan Djourou was brought down inside the box by Luiz Adriano and Arsenal got their third as Captain fabulous Cesc  Fabregas stepped up and converted the penalty to give Arsenal a 3-0 lead on the hour mark.

Talented youngster Jack Wilshere then made it 4-0 with a superb chip over the goalkeeper in the 66th minute and three minutes later Marouane Chamakh added a fifth to the tally to make it 5-0.

Shakhtar Donetsk got back a consolation goal through substitute Eduardo, who was greeted with a warm applause by the fans on his return to the Emirates stadium.

Chelsea beat Spartak Moscow in the group F encounter at the Luzhniki Stadium, Yuri zhirkov opened the scoring for the blues with a stunning left-footed volley from outside the box in the 23rd minute of the game.

Anelka then doubled the scoring in the 43rd minute of the game with a low drive beyond the goalkeeper Dykan from the left channel after superb work from Essien made sure that the ball met the striker, who scored his 50th goal for Chelsea.

Shakhtar Donetsk fought hard in the second half but all their efforts were in vain as the strong defence of Chelsea had other plans.

Essien could have made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute but missed the target from just 10 yards.

Elsewhere the clash of the big guns in the group G saw Real Madrid beat AC Milan at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid got the opening goal in the 13th minute after the Milan defence opened up to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to blast the free-kick into the net.

Madrid doubled their lead just after a minute as Mesut Ozil's shot was deflected into the net by Daniele Bonera of AC Milan, completely deceiving the goalkeeper.

Real Madrid dominated the match and could have easily added more to their score-line but for the heroic efforts of goalkeeper Marco Amelia.
