Introduction: I started competitive racing at the age of 11. The very first class of boats I raced in was the Optimist - a single hander for children under 15. I then moved on to the 420, which is a double hander trapeze class, where my partner Pallavi Naik and I won India’s first Women’s international gold medal at the Asian Sailing Championship 2004. Since then I have taken part in a total of 5 World Championships in the Zoom8, 420, Laser Radial and Match Racing. I am now in training for the 2009 Laser Radial Worlds which is scheduled to be held in Japan in July/August 2009.
I recently won India’s first international medal by an Indian woman sailor in an Olympic class at Izola Spring Cup 2009 ISAF Grade 3 event in the Laser Radial. I am the only ISAF World ranked Indian woman Laser Radial sailor.
I am now sailing the Laser Radial on an Olympic Campaign in a bid to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. The Laser Radial is the women’s single hander event at the Olympics. I hope to qualify for the 2010 Asian Games and the 2012 Olympics and represent Tamil Nadu in the 2010 National Games.
I have been the National Champion in the Laser Radial for five years, in the 420 class for the last two years and I am also part of the Indian Women’s Match Racing Team.
I am studying for my MBBS at Chengalpet Govt Medical College, Chennai, in the 3rd year. I plan to specialize in Sports Medicine.
