After an enduring season the Volkswagen Polo Cup, India's young racing prodigy Aditya Patel talks to iSport's Motorsport Editor Kunal Shah on the current Formula1 season, the rule changes and more. He also shares his plans as he climbs up the ladder to the pinnacle of motorsport.
What's your take on the championship? Do you think Jenson Button is a deserving World Champion?
Button has always been among my list of top drivers. Ever since he was picked by Williams F1, he has been one of my favorites. I do believe that it's not a wonder that he won the championship. A few years ago, with B.A.R Honda, he proved that he has what it takes to win a world championship. Today he is the World Champion. Brawn's brain and Button's brawn was the key to their success!
Did the best driver / team win in 2009?
Yes the best team and driver won. Brawn has shown the world that a sound technical knowledge wins over money. The strategies used by Brawn this year were incredible! Monza 2009 is one GP that will not be forgotten for their strategy.
2009 - the changed regulations, did they work?
The changed regulations definitely made Formula One more competitive. Except for Toro Rosso, all teams have had drivers on the podium this year. This speaks for itself.
Ferrari and Fernando - your thoughts - you're in favour or not?
Fernando and Felipe are two drivers capable of winning the world title. I wouldn't bet on a friendly atmosphere in the Ferrari camp though! We have seen many tussles and feuds between Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa in the past.I doubt this will stop! Hence, the drama continues....
Your VW Polo season - highlights
The VW Polo cup 2009 has been a mixed year for me. It was my first ever experience in a saloon car at the beginning of the year and from there on I continued to improve till the end of the year. The competition was closer than I have ever seen before! I have learned many new things and made many new friends. I'm thankful to Volkswagen
India, JK tyre, Amaron, TTS (Germany) and my other sponsors and well wishers for giving me this opportunity and hope to come out with a better performance next year.
Your off season plans?
Off season this time would include a lot of testing and fitness provided I can find the budget to do so. I have to strike a fine balance between academics and the sport as I am in my final year of college and a good educational qualification would mean a lot to me!
