Our iExpert Kunal Shah shares his view on why things went sour in the otherwise perfect marriage between the FIA and Ferrari. And are they really headed for a divorce? Read on...

With the recent ruckus that FIA and Ferrari have created - the fans have been left in frenzy. So will Ferrari actually quit Formula1? Will the team that has been with Formula1 since its inception move on? Is A1 GP, their flagship series outside Formula1, where they are headed?

Let's leave the questions aside and first understand what has really gone wrong between the two. The FIA in its efforts to reduce the operating costs for teams have gone ahead and 'force' implemented a voluntary budget cap. The budget cap would mean that a team would need to run its entire F1 operations on a budget of 40m pounds.

The teams that would adhere to the budget would get an advantage in terms of technical regulations as compared to the teams who chose to operate without the budget cap. While a budget cap sounds interesting and also seems like a step in the right direction for Formula1, especially since the top teams are spending in excess of $300 million annually even in the recessionary phase, that it has been 'force' implemented is what has created problems.

Ferrari, Renault, BMW and most of the other manufacturer teams have been around since decades. While Ferrari have stayed put since the first F1 race ever, many have come and gone and come back again. Let us understand that running F1 team operations is a massive exercise. Teams not only have factories and bases, but also test tracks that they own and run for internal testing. F1 teams have only grown over the years and are a result of many years of investing and learning.

Ferrari have been at the forefront for many years to come. They have a massive factory and employ the best brains in the world to propel them to victory in F1 - year on year. Their cars, mechanics, engineers and everyone always seem a shade above the others simply because of their commitment to F1 - both emotionally and commercially.
