iExpert and Volkswagen Polo Cup racer Aditya Patel shares his experience and excitement of the VW Polo Cup coming to India with our motorsport expert Kunal Shah
Yes, finally motorsport is growing and how. While there are talks of the 2011 Indian Grand Prix being firmed, German auto major Volkswagen have confirmed bringing their esteemed Volkswagen Polo Cup to India in 2010.While the VW Polo Cup will of course have brand objectives to meet – it will do a world of good to Indian motorsport. Not only will it inject professional management and better racing cars, it will surely raise the bar of competitiveness for Indian drivers.
And who better to introduce VW Polo Cup to iSport and its readers. iExperts Kunal Shah and Aditya Patel in dialogue for the VW Polo Cup:
VW Polo Cup - how was the experience?
The Polo cup was an unbelievable experience! The whole field of 28 cars in Europe is covered in a little more than one second! You can go from hero to zero with the smallest mistake. Consistency is the key to this championship. I'd like to thank Volkswagen India, JK tyre, Amaron, TTS (Germany), MAS Holdings and Virtu technologies for all their support.
How different was it from the Indian series you have earlier raced in?
It is of course very different from the formula cars I'm used to. The car is heavier and is front wheel driven. It took me three races to get into the groove. Another big difference is the competition. Minimal set up changes puts every driver on a level playing field.

Learnings as a driver - on and off track
The championship basically aims at developing driver techniques. Setup changes are limited to tire pressure and the front anti-roll bar. The Polo cup drivers develop a very close relationship by the end of the season. It's comparable to a classroom in school where students are taught and put to race (The Exam!).
VW Polo Cup - are you considering participation in the Indian edition?
That's not confirmed yet. Hopefully something will come through.
Chennai and Coimbatore - do you think the VW Polo Cup should visit other cities
It will be a great boost for them to have street races in different cities. That will boost the popularity of the championship and will encourage participation as well. It will be a refreshing change from Chennai and Coimbatore.
Which cities in your opinion?
Mumbai and Delhi would be great!
Will it help grow motorsport in india?
In my opinion it's a great championship with good competitive cars and at a reasonable price. Drivers don't have to worry about setups. It's all about getting out there and showing what you've got! It will increase the awareness of the sport and will also encourage participation over the years to come.

iSport only hopes that the VW Polo Cup does raise the bar of Indian motorsport and helps in producing India's first international motorsport champion! Go Polo!
