iSport's F1 Pitstop: Felipe Massa drove a strong race to 2nd in the Bahrain Grand Prix. iSporter Chirag Mansukhani traces his favourite driver through the sand-laden GP.

Felipe Massa had a dream start to the 2010 Formula1 season finishing the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2nd only to teammate Fernando Alonso. Yes, it would have been an even more fantastic outcome had Massa held Alonso’s overtaking attempt on the first lap and led on to win the race. Having said that the circumstances, the extreme heat and the fact that the Bahrain Grand Prix was Felipe’s first race after his fatal crash 8th months ago does speak volumes about his commitment to get back to Formula1.
Massa fought valiantly to make his F1 comeback and has been training hard since the end of last season racing go karts and driving the 2007 Ferrari F1 car to gear up for his 2010 return. His Bahrain GP result made a big impact and sent a statement to anyone who thought he couldn’t return to competitive F1 anymore.
After qualifying 2nd on the grid behind the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel, Felipe started off well and put himself in prime position to contest for the race lead strongly. However, after fending off a charging Alonso in the first corner of the opening lap, he had to let his team-mate take advantage into the second corner. While many feel that Felipe let off Fernando easily one gets the feeling that this will not happen to Felipe later on in the season as he will probably go on to be a lot more aggressive.
All said and done it was a truly spectacular race with Felipe coping well in his Ferrari. The Ferrari boys notched up a 1-2 and valuable constructors’ points. Felipe will look to consolidate the good start in a couple of weeks time in Australia where we all hope to see him take pole position and be the first to take the chequered flag.
