FOTA Breaks Away from FIA

In a decision that could change the sport forever, FOTA decided to part ways with FIA and start a rebel championship. Kunal Ghate writes in with his first thoughts.

fiaAfter months of dispute over the new set of regulations proposed by FIA to reduce the cost of running a F1 team, FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) has finally taken the bold step of breaking away from F1 and forming their own series.

The FOTA, today, in a press release has clearly mentioned, "The teams have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners. This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.".

Though this is a disastrous news for the sport for Formula One, I personally feel this is the best thing that could have happened to the sports. It was about time the teams took a stand for the betterment of the sport and in their own interest.

According to FIA, Scuderia Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso are contracted till 2011 and hence will get an automatic entry in the 2010 Championship, albeit against their will. Ferrari has stated that contract, signed in 2005, was invalidated by the FIA when they failed to recognise the Scuderia's right of veto over the new regulations.

The teams BMW-Sauber, BrawnGP, Scuderia Ferrari, McLaren-Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, Renault, Scuderia Toro Rosso and Toyota will start their own new series possibly from 2010 itself, the name, rules & regulations of which are yet to be disclosed to the world.

The next few weeks are going to be tough for teams like Scuderia Ferrari & RBR as the FIA will not leave this chance to sue them for millions of pounds, as stated by Ecclestone.

Also, Brawn GP are in a fix, neither do they want to leave F1 following their massive success in the 09 season so far, nor do they want to get involved in a mess with FOTA, since Ross Brawn had stated clearly that they will race in F1 for the 2010 Championship, but are now bound to accept the FOTA decision.

This news may put an end to the battle between FIA & FOTA as far as the 2010 regulations are concerned, but has now sparked a bigger legal war between.

I personally cannot wait to get more insights on this new series that FOTA is planning, especially the regulations. I'd also like to see what their car will look and sound like; how many new teams will join hands with them; who is going to govern and organize the races. But the most important thing is, what will happen in the remaining F1 races of the 09 season?

iSport.in will soon bring to you the details of the new series and regular views from a fans perspective. Stay tuned.
