Higher Expectations from Force India in the Turkish GP

iSport F1 Pitstop: Force India are debuting their F-duct in Turkey this weekend. iSporter Prasad Rao is confident of the f-duct and his team’s showing at the Turkish GP.

forcefduct

This season, I am enjoying writing articles on Force India. It’s not only because the team is doing well but also my optimism is justified with consistent and ever improving results. The season is already six races old and now its journey to Istanbul for Turkish Grand Prix. Force India’s performance has been simply exceptional with already 30 points in their kitty. Out of the total of 12 starts between the 2 drivers, Force India has finished 8 times and has scored points in 5 races. No more does the team lingers at the bottom of the table, instead it is finishing higher up the grid each time as this season gets older.

Turkish GP shall be a special experience for Force India with the team unveiling its own F-duct system. With this move, Force India is keeping pace with most of its rivals not just on the track, but also in the mid-season development cycle. It is no mean feat for a private team to match the pace of the manufacturer teams when it comes to mid-season developments. The F-duct system gives the driver speed advantage on long straights. The Istanbul circuit shall support this upgrade in the car. The F-duct system shall be used during the practice sessions called Switchable Rear Wing (SRW). This SRW device helps the driver to manually alter the airflow over the rear wing thus gaining the speed advantage on the straights.

Sutil & Liuzzi are full of confidence especially after the last grand prix in Monaco where they registered the team’s first double points finish. Dr. Vijay Mallya is sure his team would just improve from here and shall be an outfit to look forward to. Last year, Turkish GP was not up to the mark for Force India. Sutil finished 17th and Giancarlo Fisichella was last due to an early retirement. Liuzzi wasn’t there then. So historically they’ve not done too well at this circuit, but as we’ve seen FIF1 re-write their history books this season, I think Turkish GP’s history too will have FIF1 in the points finish.

And moreover FIF1’s performance, my writing style is changing. Thanks to the performance of Force India, there is no more optimism. Reality is within our reach. Capabilities have surpassed the expectations. This season is definitely been Red Bull’s till now but Force India has painted the tri-colour on most of the circuits as well with good consistent performances. Only time will tell how the F-duct system works and whether the drivers actually take best advantage of it.

The qualifying didn't go too well, any thoughts on that?

Well its was one of those days I would say. Luizzi struggled with grip as with a lot of other drivers and Sutil should've been there in the top 10. If you notice, Petrov upped his game and suddenly outpaced his team-mate. So Petrov was never in the script ;-) Sutil should've been 9/10 on the grid, but 11 is not bad either. He can make a tyre choice and see if he can climb the grid on strategy.

Overall a mixed qualifying session. Sutil was very confident on making it to Q3 bt was unfortunate. Hope to see better racing today in the evening...
