iSport motorsport expert Kunal Shah is pleasantly surprised as he pens his piece on Michael Schumacher's return to Ferrari.
While there are almost confirmed reports that 7 times World Champion Michael Schumacher will make a return to Formula1 and fill in his ward Felipe Massa’s vacant F60 seat – globally the fans have been surprised and pleasantly so.
After Felipe’s freak accident in Hungary last week, Kimi raced the sole Ferrari to the second step of the podium in what seemed to many as Ferrari’s sudden return to form. However, the biggest question post-race was – who would fill in Massa’s shoes? Which driver would help Ferrari to a safe ‘third’ in the Constructors Championship?
Marc Gene, Luca Badoer, Nico Hulkenberg, Sebastian Bourdias and even Jacques Villeneuve were many of the names discussed in the paddock. While Marc and Luca have been Ferrari’s able test drivers for almost a decade, Willi Weber managed young-gun Nico was also in the running. STR laid-off driver Bourdias also seemed an obvious choice, since he was the only driver on the list who had driven the 2009 spec cars – successfully or not. And of course, one can never match the passion of a Villeneuve joining forces with a Ferrari.
The other not so obvious choice also was Michael Schumacher, who since his retirement from the top flight in 2006 has been an advisor to the Scuderia. However, post his meeting with Stefano and Luca today – Ferrari made a surprising announcement – that Schumacher indeed would fill in for Felipe Massa.
That the multiple World Champion is fit or no, doesn’t matter! That he’s not driven in competitive F1 in the last 3 years, doesn’t matter! What matters is the passion and dedication that Schumacher has always had for Formula1 and of course Ferrari.
Will Schumacher be able to do a Lance Armstrong? Will he beat the rookies at their own game – even after 3 years of retirement?
The next 3 weeks are crucial for Ferrari and Schumacher – watch this space for more!
