Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar won the toss, elected to field and got off to a brilliant start reducing the Royal Challengers to 19 for 2 inside five overs, which included a wicket off the first ball of the innings as Malinga cleaned up opener Mayank Agarwal with a brilliant outswinging Yorker. Dilshan who was playing an uncharacteristically slow innings then steadied the ship adding 91 runs in 12 overs with AB de Villiers. Malinga then returned to clean up Asad Pathan for a duck in the next over.
