IPL Update from the iSport IPL Pavilion: A breath-taking innings of 95 from 52 balls from Murali Vijay powered Chennai to a humongous total of 205 and then a brilliant bowling spell by Ashwin (3/16) finished off Bangalore winning by 58 runs and lifting the IPL trophy at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai.

Chennai won the toss, elected to bat and the decision proved to be blessing in disguise as openers Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey gave them a blistering start, Vijay started off the blitz hitting Sreenath Aravind for a maximum over midwicket. Hussey then took over, hitting Zaheer Khan for a maximum over deep backward square leg off the first ball of the third over. The pair accumulated 56 runs from the power play overs. Vettori then bowled a rare economical over conceding just 5 runs. Vijay then took on Vettori hitting him for a six over long on as the pair accumulated 23 runs from the next two overs.
Vijay was then dropped by Pomersbach off the second ball of the ninth over from Mithun and Vijay made them pay hitting the bowler for a cracking boundary over extra cover two deliveries later. Vijay then brought up his half-century and Chennai's century in the 11th over. Hussey then survived a run out off the first ball of the 12th over when he responded late to Vijay's call and Aravind missed a direct hit which would have found Hussey way out of his crease. Vijay then added insult to injury hitting Aravind for two sixes off the same over, scoring 18 runs from the over, taking the score to 121 from 12 overs. The pair then added 22 runs from the next two overs as Hussey brought up his half-century from 40 balls.
The pair then took Syed Mohammad to the cleaners hitting him for two sixes before Hussey holed out to long on in the same over. Hussey played a classic innings of 63 from 45 deliveries including three hits to the fence and three over it. The fall of wicket slowed down the batsmen a little bit as the next two overs yielded just 11 runs. Dhoni then gave Gayle a taste of his own medicine hitting him for humongous sixes over deep square leg and deep midwicket. An unselfish Vijay was unlucky to miss out on a century as he departed off the first ball of the 19th over, caught at extra cover for 95 from 52 deliveries. Vijay's 52-ball innings included four hits to the fence and six over it. Gayle bowled a brilliant last over conceding just one run from first three balls and then picking up wickets of Morkel and Raina off consecutive deliveries, but Bravo finished off Chennai's innings in style hitting the last delivery of the innings for a maximum over long-on to take the score past 200, setting up a humongous target of 205 for Bangalore.
Chasing a huge total, Bangalore got off to a disastrous start losing the in-form Chris Gayle, caught behind off Ashwin for duck of the fourth delivery of the innings. Ashwin then picked up Mayank Agarwal in his next over, disturbing his timber with Carom ball. AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli then tried to resurrect the innings adding 32 from four overs, but Jakati broke the partnership trapping de Villiers leg before wicket to reduce Bangalore to 48 for 3 in the seventh over. Jakati then had Pomersbach caught and bowled and Raina picked up the important wicket of Kohli, trapping him leg before wicket to reduce Bangalore to 69 for 5 in 10 overs.
Ashwin then made it worse for Bangalore picking up Vettori caught and bowled for duck. Mithun and Saurabh Tiwary then scored 15 runs off 12th over from Raina, but Bangalore were caught on the back foot again when Mithun holed out to long on off Bravo for 11. With 114 required from 42 balls, Tiwary and Zaheer Khan added 38 runs from 5.4 overs, but Zaheer departed in 19th over caught at deep cover as Bangalore managed to score just 17 runs following Khan's dismissal, losing the match by 58 runs.
Murali Vijay was named the man of the match for his blistering innings of 95 from 52 deliveries.
Result: Chennai Super Kings won by 58 runs

... RCB paid the price for depending on bowlers like Arvind and Mithun who according to Sunil Gaveskar, had never learnt from their previous experiences and continued bowling full and right to the bat and feeding the batsmen-Vijay and Hussey batted very well but they were fed and not tested at any time by the bowlers , dropping catches and wayward throwing and giving unnecessary runs too helped the cause. Gayle sadly fell to Ashwin once again and Jakati bowled well in tandem. If RCB is to fare well next year they should find good bowlers and not depend on the present lot as Gayle will not be able to bail them out always- he failed thrice and RCB lost them as the other batsmen could not cope. Though being a RCB fan I congratulate CSK on their win and the manner in which Captain Cool (Dhoni) led them to dismiss RCB to such a low score.- K M C PEERA, Sri Lanka |
