A swashbuckling innings of 106 from 55 balls from skipper Adam Gilchrist helped Punjab post a humongous total of 232 and then a brilliant bowling spell by Piyush Chawla (4/17) finished off Bangalore winning by 111 runs and reaching fifth position in the table with 14 points at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala
Gilchrist won the toss, elected to bat and got off to a good start as he and Valthaty added 25 runs from four overs. Valthaty outscored his opening partner hitting 20 runs from 17 deliveries before being caught at mid-off off a slower one from Langeveldt. Shaun Marsh joined the skipper and the pair batted cautiously for the next three overs adding just 13 runs. The pair then scored 11 runs off Mithun as Gilchrist brought up his 100th Twenty20 six with a pull over deep square leg.
The pair then broke the shackles in the eighth over hitting Sreenath Aravind for 21 runs which included a six and a four each by the two batsmen. The next over from Gayle yielded 15 runs courtesy Gilchrist who hit fourth and fifth balls for maximum over long off and deep midwicket respectively. A hat-trick of sixes from the skipper in the next over brought up his half-century from 25 balls and in process helped Punjab reach 99 from 10 overs.
The next four overs yielded 44 runs, but the worst was yet to come as the 15th over from van der Wath yielded 30 runs, it was a Shaun Marsh blitz this time as he hit three sixes and three fours to race to 66 form 37 deliveries. Van der Wath was then smacked for 16 runs in his next over as the pair took the score to 220 for 1 in the 19th over.
Gilchrist then brought up much deserved ton with a smack over extra cover boundary and then hit one over gully before getting caught at short third man for 106. His 55-ball inning included eight hits to the fence and nine over it. The pair added a record 206 runs from 16 overs taking the score to 232 from 20 overs. Marsh remained not out on 79 from 49 deliveries with seven hts to the fence and five over it.
Chasing an improbable target of 233, Royal Challengers got off to a bad start as Praveen Kumar bowled a brilliant first over conceding no run, bowling to Chris Gayle. An under pressure Gayle then succumbed in the next over getting out for a seven-ball duck, caught behind off Ryan Harris. Virat Kohli then showed some promise hitting back-to-back fours off Harris in the fourth over before he was caught in slips off the very next ball trying to pull a short delivery outside off.
The Royal Challengers' batsmen were never allowed to settle down as Saurabh Tiwary and Asad Pathan departed in the sixth and seventh overs respectively. Mohammad Kaif and de Villiers tried to put on a brave fight adding 29 runs from 22 balls, but Kaif departed in the 11th over stumped off Chawla after being deceived by a well-flighted delivery.
Chawla then made it game set and match in his next over removing Arun Karthik (bowled via a googly) and big fish De Villiers caught behind for 34. With 144 required from 42 balls it was an improbable task and Chawla took a step forward in finishing off the innings by removing Van der Wath leg before wicket via a googly and Harris and Srivastava followed removing the last two to wrap up the innings on 121 in the 17th over.
Adam Gilchrist was named the man of the match for his breath-taking innings of 106 from 55 deliveries.
