A disciplined bowling spell by Munaf Patel (3/8) and a last ball six by Rohit Sharma (20*) helped Mumbai chase down 118 and beat Pune by seven wickets at Wankhede stadium, Mumbai.

Mumbai made two changes to the team bringing in James Franklin and Abu Nechim in place of Davy Jacobs and Harbhajan Singh (injured). Yuvraj Singh won the toss, elected to bat, but got off to a disastrous start losing four wickets inside five overs.

Ali Murtaza started the proceedings and bowled a tight over conceding only three runs and the next two overs from Malinga and Murtaza yielded only thirteen runs which increased the pressure on the batsmen, the home team was rewarded for its discipline in the fourth over when Ryder mistimed a pull off Nechim straight in the hands of Tendulkar at mid wicket.

Nechim then picked up his second wicket of the over when he had Mithun Manhas caught behind for a duck. The second ball of Munaf Patel's first over yielded the wicket of Tim Paine who was cleaned up trying to play a pull, missing out completely, and delivery later Munaf got the big fish, Yuvraj singh caught behind for a duck to reduce Pune to 17 for 4 in the fifth over.

Robin Uthappa and Mohnish Mishra then put on 35 runs in 3.4 overs before Mohnish Mishra's departed trying to hit Murtaza for a maximum only to find Rohit Sharma on the long on boundary. Uthappa was going well at other end hitting the odd boundary at regular intervals. He then added 35 runs with Murali Kartik before poor shot selection saw Kartik depart in the 13th over caught at mid on off Malinga for 11. Two overs later a brilliant catch by Pollard at long on helped Mumbai secure the crucial wicket of Uthappa (45).

Uthappa's 37-ball innings included six hits to the fence and one over it. Rahul Sharma and Parnell added 11 runs in the next over to take the score to 111 in the 16th over before the latter was cleaned up by Franklyn. Rahul Sharma played a handy knock of 13 from 9 but Malinga got the wicket of Wagh in the 17th over, while Munaf Patel removed Sharma in the 18th over to end the innings on 118.

In reply, Mumbai got off to a bad start losing Franklyn in the second over, caught at mid on. Tendulkar and Rayudu then steadied the ship adding cautious 74 runs from 12 overs with clever singles and twos. Tendulkar (35) then departed in the 14th over trying to hit Rahul Sharma over long off but finding the fielder and Rayudu (37), who had hit Thomas for a boundary with a brilliant leg flick, departed off the very next ball dancing down the track and hitting it straight to long on.

With 20 runs required off 18 deliveries, Symonds hit Parnell for consecutive boundaries off the first two balls of the 18th over, but the bowler struck back conceding only a run from next four deliveries, bringing down the equation to 11 from 12 deliveries.

Symonds and Rohit Sharma were playing cautiously and managed six runs off the next over to bring down the equation to 5 from 6 deliveries. Murali Kartik was chosen to bowl the final over and his first three balls yielded only three runs, the fourth ball was a dot ball which brought down the equation to 2 from 2, Symonds survived a run out off the fifth ball trying to go for a cheeky single at mid on as the bowler failed to gather the throw cleanly. With one run needed off the last delivery, a cool and calm Rohit Sharma dispatched the ball for a maximum over extra cover to win the match for Mumbai by seven wickets.

Munaf Patel was named the man of the match for his disciplined bowling of 3/8 in 2.2 overs.

Result: Mumbai Indians won by 7 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)
