iSport's new intern Suraj Kori marks his debut by doing a quick round up of Day 1 action of the India Vs. Sri Lanka Test Match which is currently underway in Mumbai. We wish India and Suraj a long innings!

The Lankans started the day on a high but couldn’t finish in it the same fashion, thanks to some good bowling performance from Harbhajan Singh.

The seamers struggled with their line and length and didn’t bowl in right areas. The Sri Lankan openers took complete advantage of this and set up a good opening partnership. Even Man of the Match of the previous match, Sreesanth seemed helpless in front of them. Zaheer Khan did not seem to be hundred percent fit and this was clearly visible when he had to field from the boundary line. His throws from the boundary did not have much strength and he didn’t bowl long spells. This raises question on the team’s selection criteria – to what extent is it right to include a player who is not hundred percent fit?

The pitch seemed to be much tricky. It was a good pitch for batting as well as bowling. There was a genuine turn in the pitch and Indian ace spinner Harbhajan Singh made the most of it. He read the pitch correctly and bowled in the right areas and was rewarded with some crucial breakthroughs.

The pitch showed even bounce and by spending some time on the pitch the batsman could predict the line and length of the ball. Hence, the batsmen did not have any problems in playing short deliveries. Stroke players like Dilshan spent time on the pitch before going on to score a well played century.

Dilshan would have gone to play a longer innings had it not been for the wrong decision made by the umpire. It was clearly visible in the action replay that the ball hit his pad and missed the bat completely. This raises questions as to whether the referral system should be inferred to make the decisions much fairer.

It would have been a good day for the Lankans had they lost 2 or 3 wickets less, but they ended their day’s play at 368/8. The match is still wide open, but I consider that the Indians have an edge over the Lankans considering their solid batting line up!
