A spectacular all round performance from Shakib Al Hasan saw Bangladesh beat New Zealand by nine runs in Mirpur.

Winning the toss and Batting first Bangladesh managed to score only 228 runs in 50 overs with a brilliant batting display in the power play overs by Shakib Al Hasan who made 58 off 51 balls the second highest scorer being Shahriar Nafees with 35 runs.

Defending a moderate total Bangladesh were dealt with huge blow when their captain and strike bowler left the field with a sprained ankle after bowling just one over. On the other hand Brendon McCullum was going berserk as he hit 61 off 45 balls before Shakib Al Hasan struck two important blows in the 15th over of the match first that of Brendon McCullum and two balls later Elliot.

With the match evenly balanced at 85-4, the match was temporarily stopped due to rain and when the Kiwis came out to bat again they were given a revised target of 210 off 37 overs.

A strong fight from Taylor and Vettori and then at the end by Mills and Nathan McCullum wasn’t able to overpower the brilliance of Shakib Al Hasan who conceded only 3 runs and snatched the wicket of Nathan McCullum in the penultimate over of the game leaving the kiwis with a daunting task of scoring 18 runs off the last over.

The Kiwis managed to score only 8 runs off the last over and lost the first match of the series on D/L method.

Scores: Bangladesh: 228/10

New Zealand: 200/8 (D/L method)

Man of the match: Shakib Al Hasan

Series: Bangladesh leads the 5-match series 1-0
