iSporter Jigar Mehta takes time off the IPL and pens a thoughtful piece on a talent that he believes should have been playing the current IPL season.

‘’Tamim Iqbal Khan’’, 20years & 360 days old - this name at this tender age has already started striking terror in the minds of the opposition bowlers.
A young player from Chittagong first made an impression in his under 19 cricket days when he hit a fiery 112 runs from just 71 balls guiding his team to a gritty victory against the English under 19 side.
The cricketing world started recognizing this star, nephew of former Bangladeshi captain Akram Khan, when he hit a smashing 51 runs off 53 balls after hammering the Indian bowlers all over the park. This particular innings of his set the tone for the Bangadeshi Tigers and awarded them with an unexpected and valuable victory over India in the 2007 Cricket World Cup; breaking billions of Indian hearts as the Indians were knocked out of the World Cup.

From then on this young kid has never looked back and with a series of good performances has won many a hearts in the cricketing world. Banking on his performances in 2007 World Cup this young lad was picked up for the New Zealand tour in 2007/08 season and he didn’t disappoint the Bangladeshi selectors by scoring half centuries in both the innings of the test match.
His innings of 128 in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test vs. West Indies in 2009, which helped the Tigers win a historic test, is considered to be one of the finest innings played by him. He then played another brilliant innings of 151 in Jan 2010 against India, but was in vain as India crushed Bangladesh in the test match and subsequently the series. His mature innings only cemented the belief that the cricketing world had in this young cricketer.

However, his best was yet to come when he played a swashbuckling innings of 154 off 138 balls to help his team beat Zimbabwe despite the heroics of a lesser known Cris Coventry, who also equaled Saeed Anwar’s World Record of 194 in the same match.
His strengths are classy straight drives and great pull & hook shots. With so much to show on his profile at this tender age, and almost single handedly performing against the best oppositions and with a Test average of close to 34 and ODI average close to 30 – Tamim is now starting to show his worth in the shortest form of the game T20 with clean and crisp hitting.
What surprises me is that this young, elegant and classy player has not yet found a place in the IPL? Are the IPL franchisees not taking note of younger talent coming up the ranks? It is only unfair that talented players like Tamim hailing from a small nation like ‘Bangladesh’ are not yet a part of the Indian Premier League – one who I surely believe can add to the spectacle.
