The Hockey World Cup is upon us and its time for Team India to turn on the heat as nations from across the world get ready to battle. As the host nation there will definitely be some pressure on the men-in-blue. Having said that the stage is set and the time has come to revive our country’s national sport and there could be no bigger or better stage than the World Cup and that too on our home turf.
Indian Hockey in recent years has gone through a somewhat turbulent phase – suffering not just from its internal problems but also with the fact that Cricket has almost taken over as our pseudo national sport. All that remains for Hockey is to be demoted from being our national sport!
With the feud between the players and the board now over it is time for the players to prove their mettle on the turf. I have no doubt in my mind that our countrymen will rise to the occasion. After all, this is one moment that every player dreams of - to win the World Cup!
Now that the World Cup is in India it is up to all of us; up to people like you and me to go out there and support our players and help them bring the Cup back home. We, the fans can make a huge difference.
India last won the World Cup in 1975 and it is now time to put our country back on the map of World Hockey proving to everyone that we still have what it takes. Past greats like Dhanraj Pillay who have brought many laurels to our nation will surely keep a close eye on this team and be hoping that this team can emulate the 1975 World Cup victory.
