iSport Interview: iSporter Kunal Shah interviews India’s tennis sensation and Commonwealth Games Gold medal winner Somdev Devvarman.

First of iSport’s Commonwealth Games interviews – I spoke to Gold medal winner Somdev Devvarman.

Somdev has been interviewed on iSport before, but this was special. He delivered the goods when they mattered the most. Here’s the intereview:

Kunal @ iSport: How does it feel after winning the Gold?
Somdev:
It feels really good. It’s difficult to put in words the feeling of winning a gold medal for the country.

Kunal @ iSport: Did you have a planned strategy or way to go about it?
Somdev:
I just took it one match at a time. Tried to play my best each time that I was out there.

Kunal @ iSport: Who would you say has been your toughest competitor in CWG?
Somdev:
Well I obviously had a few tough matches leading up to the finals. I’m just glad I could play my best tennis and come out winning.

Kunal @ iSport: Would you say Tennis is a sport where you need the strength of the mind/or the body?
Somdev:
Tennis is about using all your facilities, mental and physical. One without the other is of no use. They compliment each other.

Kunal @ iSport: How has your CWG experience been so far with all the pros and cons put against it by media?
Somdev:
It’s actually been a great experience. I can speak only for myself and everything from accommodation to the facilities at the stadium has been awesome.

Kunal @ iSport: Your Men's Double Finals were against Lee-Hesh. How was it playing against them?
Somdev:
Playing Lee and Hesh is an honour. We played them for the bronze and of course we were all hoping we’d be playing for the gold. They are icons of Indian tennis and playing against them is just something else.

Kunal @ iSport: Any learnings from the Lee-Hesh match you would like to share?
Somdev:
Well, it’s no secret that they’re way more experienced than us. And I think that just came through. They are both really sharp at the net and play their best when it matters.

Kunal @ iSport: How do you think Tennis should be promoted in India?
Somdev:
More stadiums, more courts accessible to all kids. Any kid that wants to play should have the opportunity.

Kunal @ iSport: Your message to iSporters
Somdev:
Thanks for following Indian sport and giving the people great updated info.

See the final medal tally here. India finished 2nd in the overall standings of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
