2010 has been a great year for Indian sports. Here is iSporter Jigar Mehta's list Top 10 Indian Sports Personalities who have made the country proud in the year 2010.

1) Sachin Tendulkar : Cricket

He has been in form of his life, at 37, he still yearns to reach the 'next level' as a batsman. The year 2010 has been very special to him here is a look at his achievements;

Achievements in 2010:

  • Became the first cricketer to score a double century in ODI on February 24th in Gwalior.
  • Became the first batsman in history to hit fifty centuries in test cricket.
  • Became the first man to score 14,000 runs in Test cricket
  • Won the ICC cricketer of the year award.
  • Became the first Indian to be nominated for the 2011 Laureus 'World Sportsman of the Year'award.
  • Won the "Lebara People's Choice Award and the Outstanding Achievement in Sport Award," at the inaugural Asian Award
  • Became the only current batsman to find a place in ESPNcricinfo's all-time Test World XI.
  • Was awarded the honorary rank of Group captain by the Indian Air Force.

2) Saina Nehwal: Badminton

She is the latest buzz in Indian Sport who has taken the Badminton circuit by a storm. She has been the main force behind revolutionizing the popularity of Badminton in India. The 20 year old, who is the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament, has been in tremendous form this year.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Became the first Indian Woman to reach the semi finals of 2010 All-England Super Series.
  • Won three titles: Indian Open Grand Prix,SingaporeOpen Super Series, and Indonesian Super Series in three weeks.
  • Achieved a career high world ranking of No. 2 in July.
  • Awarded the coveted Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India's highest sporting honour.
  • Won the Gold medal in the Women's Singles badminton event in the Commonwealth Games helping India take the 2nd spot in medals tally.
  • Won the year ending Hong Kong Super Series title, her fourth Super Series title of the year.

3) Somdev Devvarman: Tennis

He is one of the most promising stars to have emerged in the country in the recent years. 2010 has been an exciting year for Somdev Devvarman, who is achieving grand success in tennis for India.

Achievements in 2010:

Broke into the top 100 of world rankings, first Indian to do so since Leander Paes.

  • Won the Men's Tennis gold medal in theCommonwealth Games 2010.
  • Won the Men's Singles Tennis gold medal in the2010 Asian Games.
  • Won Men's Doubles Tennis gold medal in Asian Games 2010 partnering Sanam Singh.
  • Was Instrumental in elevating India back to the Davis Cup World Group after by winning his reverse singles tie against Brazil in Chennai.

4) Sushil Kumar: Wrestling

This champion grappler from Najafgarh has been in top form and has had a scintillating year, here are his achievements.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Became the first Indian wrestler to win a world championship title in September.
  • Won gold medal at the2010 Commonwealth Gamesheld inDelhi beating Heinrich Barnes of South Africa 7-0 in the finals in the 66 kg freestyle wrestling category.
  • Defeated Famara Jarjou of the Gambia 3-0 in a record 9 seconds in the semi-finals of the CWG.
  • Won Gold medal at the 2010 Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi.

5) Viswanathan Anand: Chess

The 'King of Madras' doesn't need any introduction; he has been making the country proud all these years and 2010 was no exception as he showed the whole world why he is a champion. Here are his achievements.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Successfully defended his World Championship title by beating Veselin Topalov in Sofia,Bulgaria.
  • Regained world no. 1 ranking With a FIDE rating of 2804, 2 points ahead of Norway's Magnus Carlsen.
  • One of the few players in world Chess to stay in top 3 in last 20 years.

6) Vijender Singh: Boxing

The 'Nawab of Najafgarh' is winning hearts of the millions not only with his flamboyant looks but also with his superb performances in sporting arena.

Here are his achievements.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Awarded thePadma Shriin January, for outstanding contribution to Indian sports.
  • Won the silver medal in the Champions of Champions boxing tournament in China.
  • Won the Gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Boxing Championship held in New Delhi defeating England's Frank Buglioni 13-3.
  • Won gold medal in the 2010 Asian games, china, beating the defending World champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan 7-0.

7) MC Mary Kom: Boxing

While many believe that boxing is much of a male sport, but here comes an athlete who has proved everybody wrong, yes she is Manipur's Mangte Chungneijang Merykom more commonly known as Mary Kom, the most promising Indian female boxer.

Aged 27, a mother of two, Mary Kom is going from strength to strength and has had a tremendous year here are her achievements.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Successfully defended her women's 48kg world title this year in Barbados defeating Romanian opponent Duta Seluta 16-6.
  • She had the honour of bearing the Queen's Baton in its Opening Ceremony run in the stadium for the 2010 Commonwealth Games of Delhi.
  • Won the Bronze medal in the 51kg category at the Asian Games.

8) Arjun Atwal: Golf

This champion from Kolkata has made sure that India's name is shining in the Golf arena too and has had 2010 as the most memorable year of his life. Here are her achievements.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Became the first Indian to win a tournament on the US PGA Tour when he lifted the Wyndham Championship trophy.
  • Finished second in the Tavistock Cup.
  • Has made the cut in 11 out of the 13 tournaments played this year in the PGA Tour.

9) Prasanta Karmakar: Swimming

This Para-swimming Champion has not let his physical disability or poverty come in his way of making the country proud.

With his great dedication and determination and all his achievements he has been a great inspiration to a lot of sportsmen around the world and a true champion and patriot. 2010 has been a great year for him.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Qualified for one of the biggest event in Paralympics swimming, 2010 IPC World Swimming Championships, Eindhoven, Netherlands, for the first time.
  • Became the first Indian ever to win a medal in aquatics at the Commonwealth Games when he won the Bronze Medal in the 50m Freestyle S9 Category.
  • Was officially ranked the Asian No.3 in the S-9 category.
  • Won a Bronze medal each in the Men's 200m Individual Medley race (SM9 category) and Men's 50m Freestyle (S9 category) at the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Para Games.

10) Gagan Narang: Shooting

This promising shooting star from Hyderabad has been a boon to the Indian sports. The 27 year old along with Abhinav Bindra has succeeded in giving a whole new dimension to the sport of shooting in the Country.

2010 has been a fantastic year for this 27-year old.

Achievements in 2010:

  • Won Gold medals in 10m Air Rifle (Individual), 50m Rifle (Individual) events at the 2010 Commonwealth Gamesof Delhi.
  • Won Gold medals 10m Air Rifle (Pairs), and 50m Air Rifle (Pairs) events at the 2010 Commonwealth Gamesof Delhi
  • Won the Bronze medal in the ISSF 10m World Shooting Championships this year
