A match-turning innings of 49 from 27 balls from Eoin Morgan coupled with superb bowling spell of 4 for 22 from Jade Dernbach helped England beat India by six wickets in one-off T20 at Old Trafford, Manchester. Debutant Ajinkya Rahane was the star for India with a gritty innings of 61 from 39 deliveries.

MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat. Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Dravid made their debuts for India, while Alex Hales and Jos Butler made their debuts for England. India got off to a good start as Parthiv Patel opened his account with a lovely boundary through covers off the second ball of the innings. Rahane followed suit as he opened his account with a lovely cover drive. Rahane survived a close runout chance in the fourth over when Broad missed a direct hit with Rahane caught a few yards out. The pair added 39 runs from 4.3 overs before Patel top-edged one to mid-on's hands off Dernbach. Rahane then took Broad to the cleaners, pulling him for a boundary over square leg and followed it up with a thump over covers the very next ball as India scored 49 runs from the first six overs with the fall of Patel's wicket. Rahane brought up his half-century from 29 deliveries. New batsman, Rahul Dravid survived a stumping chance in the eighth over as Kieswetter missed a straight forward chance off Swann.
Dravid went on a rampage in the eleventh over, hitting Samit Patel for three back-to-back sixes over mid-wicket, but his t20 career came to an end in the next over when he hit one straight to cover off Bopara. India lost the plot from then on as Broad took two wickets in the next over, removing Rahane , caught at third man and then a delivery later, having Virat Kohli caught behind for four. Swann reduced the visitors to 117 for 5 in the 14th over when he had Rohit Sharma stumped for 1. Raina got into the act, pulling Broad for a maximum over deep square leg and followed it up with a sweetly guided boundary through third man. The pair of Raina and Dhoni scored 17 runs from the next over which included two humongous sixes from Raina off Bresnan scoring 12 runs from the over. Raina and Dhoni added 41 runs frm 3.3 overs for the sixth wicket before a second mini collapse saw India lose their last five wickets for just seven runs. India ended their innings on 165 from 19.4 overs.
In reply, England got off to a bad start as they lost debutant Alex Hales off the second delivery of the innings, trapped in front off Praveen Kumar. Kieswetter and Pietersen then added 58 runs from 5.4 overs for the second wicket before Kieswetter punched one straight to cover. Virat Kohli had Pietersen stumped off the very first ball of his spell to reduce England to 61 for 3 in the seventh over. Morgan then took on Rohit Sharma in the ninth over hitting him for two fours and a six, scoring 17 runs from the over. Morgan added 73 runs from eight overs with Bopara before being finally caught at point off Munaf Patel. With 29 required from 24 balls, Bopara and Samit Patel played sensibly to bring down the equation to 13 from 12. Munaf Patel bowled a wonderful penultimate over, conceding just three runs to take the equation to ten from the last over. The first delivery of the last over was wrongly adjudged as wide by the umpire, with 9 to get from six, Patel under edged a Vinay Kumar delivery for a boundary through fine leg and followed it up with a edged boundary through third man and a smashing boundary over cover to wrap up the match by six wickets with three deliveries to spare.
Jade Dernbach was named the man of the match for his superb bowling spell of 4 for 22.
