From the iSport Cricket Paddock: As the world awaits another exciting Cricket World Cup, iSporter Suraj Kori wonder if South Africa with their present team will be able to win the cup this year. Read to know his views!

South Africa is considered to be one of the strongest teams in the world! But they have been unable to win World Cup in any format of the game, be it ODI or T-20. Their performance in the group stages has been good but the problem arises in the knock round. The players have not been able to withstand the pressure. It would be expected that they win it this time.

With IPL being played just before the World Cup has been of a great asset to most of the players. Some players have been in good form hoping to continue it in the World Cup. Kallis was the second highest run getter (572) in the IPL falling a few runs short of Orange Cap winner Sachin Tendulkar. He also took 13 wickets for RCB. He was named the most consistent performer in IPL. His form and experience would surely come handy for South Africa!

Charl Langeveldt started his IPL campaign for KKR in a great manner! But he missed most of the matches due to injury. He is now fit and completely ready for the World Cup. He is the most experienced bowler in this team and his experience would definitely help.

Dale Steyn is the strike bowler of RCB and South Africa giving early breakthroughs. He took 15 wickets at 6.9 runs per over in IPL-3 which is a very impressive figure in 20-20. He bowls at an enormous speed and has great control over his line and length. He would be the bowler to watch out for in the World Cup as the fast and bouncy pitches of West Indies would grant him support…

Herschelle Gibbs scored 267 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 113.7. Well, these runs and strike rate seem very low for a player like Gibbs and it was this below par performance of his that kept him out of the team for most of the time.

J. P Duminy played 7 matches and scored 157 runs at a strike rate of 119.8. A B de Villiers’ performance on the other hand was worse with scoring just 111 runs in the same number of matches at a strike rate of 93.3 which is very less in 20-20. These two players’ form would be of a huge concern as these players form the backbone of the South African middle order!

Mark Boucher is no doubt one of the best wicket- keepers in the world today! But his batting has been a point of concern. He finishes very well and has excelled in this role for years playing for his nation. But his batting hasn’t been that impressive in IPL with scoring only 13 runs in 5 matches. He couldn’t find a place in the playing 11 of RCB as the team preferred part-time wicket keeper Robin Uthappa over him. If he doesn’t gets in form early in the tournament, South Africa might have to do the same thing.

Graeme Smith also injured himself in the early stage of IPL! But even before getting injured his performance was not upto the mark. With most of the players struggling to gain form, South Africa’s chances in this World Cup too seem blur. The captain and coach will have to do something and soon if they have to win this time!
