Ashes 5th Test Day 2 : Alastair Cook (61*) and  Andrew Strauss (60) helped England reach 167/3 after the visitors had bowled out the home side for 280 earlier on the second day of the fifth Ashes Test at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Resuming the day on 134/4, Australians started badly as they lost Brad Haddin with just nine runs added to the overnight total. He was caught behind off James Anderson for six.

Michael Hussey and Steve Smith then added 28 runs for the sixth wicket before Hussey (33) chopped one onto his stumps off Paul Collingwood.

Sixteen runs later Smith departed for 18 caught in slips by Paul Collingwood off Anderson.

Soon Australia was reduced to 189 for 8 when Peter Siddle was caught in slips by skipper Andrew Strauss off the bowling of Anderson.

Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus then resurrected the innings as they added 76 runs for the ninth wicket before Johnson was clean-bowled by Tim Bresnan for a well made 53 off 66 balls.

Fifteen runs later Anderson had Hilfenhaus caught behind for 34 to wrap up the Australian innings on 280.

Anderson ended with figures of 4 for 66.

In reply, the visitors started brightly as they went into tea at 73 for no loss.

Openers Alastair Cook (61*) and Andrew Strauss (60) added 98 runs for the first wicket in just 22.2 overs before Strauss was clean-bowled by Hilfenhaus for 60.

A run later Johnson rattled Jonathan Trott's (0) stumps to reduce the visitors to 99 for 2.

Cook and Kevin Pietersen then added crucial 66 runs for the third wicket as Cook completed his third Half-century of the series.

Cook was then lucky as he was called back after he was caught off Michael Beer but umpire Billy Bowden called him back as he doubted that Beer had overstepped and checked with the third umpire, who confirmed that the bowler had indeed overstepped the crease.

Pietersen was slowly getting into the groove but he mis-timed a hook shot off Johnson and was caught by Beer at deep backward square for 36.

Alastair Cook (61*) and night-watchman James Anderson (1*) then survived the last four overs of the day as England ended the day on 167 for 3 still trailing by 113 runs.
