James Anderson

Spectacular spell of swing bowling (5/65) from James Anderson helped the home side bundle out India for 261 and win the first test at Lord's by 196 runs.

India resumed the day on 80/1, needing 378 more runs to win and nine wickets in hand and got off to a shaky start as Laxman edged one between gully and second slip for a boundary. Dravid survived a dropped catch at short leg off Tremlett two overs later but his luck ran out as he poked one outside off to present a simple catch to the keeper, departing in the eighth over of the day for 36. The pair of Laxman and Gambhir played out the next five overs cautiously before Gambhir cut Swann through cover point boundary in the 42nd over. Laxman survived a caught behind appeal in the next over as Broad went past his edge with a cracking delivery. The umpire gave it not out but England demanded for a review, the replays showed there was no bat involved. Laxman then reached his half-century from 104 balls with a glance down to fine leg boundary.

Three overs later Laxman suffered another soft dismissal as he pulled one straight into the hands of midwicket off Anderson. Laxman's 113-ball innings of 56 included eight hits to the fence. Tendulkar got off the mark with a fine clip of hips to the midwicket boundary, but India suffered a huge blow in the next over when Swann trapped Gambhir leg before wicket for 22. Raina got off the mark with a cracking straight drive. The pair survived the next three overs as India went into stumps at 142 for 4, adding 62 runs in the session.

After lunch, Tendulkar became a tad too circumspect and went into a shell which cost him his wicket in the 67th over. At first he survived a close LBW shout off Broad and then survived a dropped catch off Anderson before being finally trapped leg before wicket off the same over.

Tendulkar played 68 deliveries for just 12 runs with just a single hit to the boundary. Raina then got into the act hitting Trott for two classic boundaries, one through mid off and other through covers. Raina reached his half-century from 90 deliveries with a flick for boundary through fine leg and a three through extra cover. The pair made sure that only one wicket was lost in the session as India went into tea at 218 for 5.

After tea, 60-run partnership between Raina and Dhoni was finally ended by Tremlett when the latter had Dhoni caught behind for 16. Harbhajan Singh came out with an aggressive mindset, hitting Tremlett for a boundary over mid off and Broad over covers. He survived a dropped catch at gully off Broad before finally mistiming one off Anderson straight to mid on.

Raina was playing brilliantly at the other end as he hit two more boundaries off Broad. Broad then cleaned up Praveen Kumar for 2 with an inswinging delivery to reduce India to 256 for 8. Anderson then got the big fish, Raina, in the next over when he had him caught behind off a delivery that moved away from the batsman. Raina's 136-ball innings of 78 included ten hits to the fence. Broad then wrapped up the match in the next over when he trapped Ishant Sharma leg before wicket to give England a 196-run victory and 1-0 lead in the four match test series.

Kevin Pietersen was named the man of the match for his brilliant innings of 202* in the first innings.
