Florentino Perez’s Galacticos kick started their new campaign in impressive fashion with Usain Bolt being invited to start the proceedings for the first match of the season. Goals from Raul, Ronaldo and Lass sealed the win for the home team. However their defensive errors were once again in the spotlight as they managed a 3-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

kaka3The match started incredibly well for Madrid when Lass fed Kaka with a sublime through ball, however the Brazilian dint make the most of the opportunity and squandered the chance. Madrid had all their latest signings playing and they were looking absolutely threatening the first few minutes into the game. Lass and Alonso were dictating and spreading the game in the midfield, however the attackers had little luck in front of the goal. Raul had a shot blocked and Kaka tried a couple of long rangers. The visitors were pretty disciplined in defence for a quarter of the half. Madrid enjoyed a lot of the possession and made the most of it when Kaka’s through ball luckily slipped through Juan Rodriguez’s legs to Benzema whose shot ricocheted of the post into Raul’s path who coolly slotted it home. Cristiano Ronaldo, too, had a golden chance with a header off Alonso’s cross however he dint manage to keep it down.

Deportivo had their own chances in the rare counter attacks but the breakthrough came when Juca’s deep cross left Madrid’s defence clueless and Riki headed the ball past Casillas. Madrid were quick to respond and another beautiful through pass by Lass found Raul in the penalty area and the veteran was fouled by Depor keeper Aranzubia. Ronaldo stepped up to the penalty spot and scored with a low shot into the left corner. Deportivo were in shambles following the goal with Madrid putting everything in the attack, however the cushion of being two goals up eluded them. The half time score being 2-1 to Madrid.

The second half started with a disaster for Madrid as Valeron received the ball at the edge of the area and after taking a touch volleyed the shot into the net. Defensive frailties were again exposed and with thirty minutes left, the teams were locked in at 2-2. Madrid’s superstars however broke the deadlock with Lass scoring an exquisite goal from 20 yards into the corner. Madrid were clearly having greater possession and had 28 shots on target as opposed to Depor’s 9! Ronaldo looked quite impressive in the counter attacks and his pass found Higuain who desperately tried to earn a penalty with a dive. Arbeloa, Garay and Marcelo did enough to prevent any goal scoring opportunities for the visitors and the match ended with Madrid picking up the three points.

Next weekend Real Madrid play Espanyol at the Cornella El Prat and it seems that their new season has started with quite a bang. Now, Consistency in winning is the only thing Pellegrini would want from his team if they want to end Barca’s title winning spree.
