Football Transfer Diary : It was expected and it has happened. Manchester City have broken the bank again by signing some super talent for their squad. Only thing that remains to be seen is…will it work? iSporter Pulasta Dhar questions whether City will do another Chelsea….

A few years ago, it was Roman Abramovich who did everything possible to make Chelsea a top team and one which would fight for major honours. They did eventually find glory, but at the cost of many genuine players being sold and numerous staff heads rolling in all directions for a bad run of form. It still continues, and when it seemed that Chelsea will find their feet long term with Ancelotti, a new team has come from nowhere in the last couple of seasons…the team is called Manchester City.
I wonder whether buying success is the right thing to do with a club. The plus point is that it might give you some success over a period of time, but with the strict UEFA financial rules that will apply from 2013, the steps City are taking should be deemed as risky. On the other hand, they are taking advantage of a rule where teams will only be able to spend on players the amount which is generated from football related incomes and not oil generated revenues.
Manchester City were expected to make big changes with Mancini becoming manger. First of all, let me make it clear that I do not like him and neither his tactics. This I can write only on India’s largest opinion based website, iSport.in. City fans should not worry as I have no intention to exploit this creative freedom, but what your club is doing I believe is ridiculous. Let us now try to see the reasoning behind the transfers made up until now.
Name: Jerome Boateng.
The feisty German right back. Soared to prominence with Hamburg and the recent German squad at the World Cup. His performances were….a meager ‘okay’.
Price: £11 Million
Was he needed? NO
Why not? When a squad boasts of one of England’s finest youth talent and solid defenders Micah Richards, Boateng doesn’t compare next to him. Also, you have Pablo Zabaleta who can play equally well on that side of the pitch. When you have nobody, we know Jolean Lescott started his career on the right side of midfield. Overall, just good back-up.
Name: David Silva
The player has failed to produce good results in Spanish training sessions and thus was not picked by his manager frequently in a highly talented Spanish squad which could have used a specialist winger. He can play on either flank and is a creative passer of the ball. Let us hope he can live up to the expectations placed on his shoulders.
Price: £24 Million
Was he needed? NO
Why not? David Silva’s transfer is indicative of Robinho’s impending departure. If Robinho goes, then this player can entertain on the flanks. He is not well built for the premier league, but we have seen him spring a surprise here and there. Even when you have Bellamy, Robinho, Adam Johnson, Wright-Phillips, Tevez and the brilliant Stephen Ireland who can all play out wide, why do you need to spend on Silva?
Name: Alexander Kolarov
Known in Serbia as their version of Roberto Carlos. Young, agile, strong and possessing a lethal left foot, Kolarov can add a lot to this City squad.
Price: £16 Million
Was he needed? YES
Why yes? Wayne Bridge is simply not good enough. Kolarov is going to push him away the instant he starts training. I have seen some clips of the boy I action and this is his time to shine. He was built for the league it seems and a few bazooka’s from his left foot won’t be bad addition.
Name: Yaya Toure
Brother of Kolo Toure came to prominence while playing the holding midfielder’s role at Barcelona. A prototype of yesteryear’s Patrick Vieira, he is strong, tall and burly.
Price: £24 Million
Was he needed? NO
Why not? Not in any circumstance would I make this player the highest paid in Premier League history. £200,000 a week? Simply ridiculous! They already have Nigel de Jong who has shown he can do the dirty work. Plus, they also possess Patrick Vieira, though 33, one of the best in the Premier League in that position till now. Gareth Barry and Vincent Kompany are also excellent holding players. They say that this position should not be occupied by many in one season as it imbalances the team. And at that price? No way!
These conclusions are not yet based on performance but by the already very strong team that City possess. I might be made to eat my hat next year if these players succeed, but as far as I am concerned, these transfers need to be balanced by sales. Let us see if that happened….
P.S. I am not sure this is the end of the buying by City. More are yet to come. It is a great example of a disorder called ‘Impulsive Buying’.
