With one-third of the amount spent in January this year by clubs in the UK, it was a bargain market. January sees some big flops and a few lucky hits. iSporter Pulasta Dhar picks the best deals of this winter….

VICTOR MOSES

From: Crystal Palace

To: Wigan Athletic

Fee: £2.5 Million

One of England’s most highly rated young players was sold for half the price he could have gone for. Shrewd work from Roberto Martinez as he took advantage of Palace’s faltering finances. They will sell him in a couple of years for a massive fee if he fulfils his potential. Another Valencia in the making?

MIDO

From: Zamalek

To: West Ham

Fee: Loan

Has considerable experience of the Premiership. Is almost free when it comes to his astonishing £1,000 a week wages!! Bargain of the season it seems. A risky signing but some capture for a club with no strikers.

CHRIS SMALLING

From: Fulham

To: Manchester United (start of next season)

Fee: £7-10 Million

Touted as Rio Ferdinand’s long term replacement and courted by a host of top European clubs, Smalling was snapped up by the world’s most popular club. Maybe that fact was reason enough for Smalling to not think twice before making his move.

BENNI McCARTHY

From: Blackburn Rovers

To: West Ham

Fee: £2.5 Million

Benni has always been a good striker for the Premiership. His pace, power and aerial prowess makes him a good target man for the creative midfielders of West Ham.

MAXI RODRIGUEZ

From: Atletico Madrid

To: Liverpool

Fee: Free

An established player with his national team and a much needed wide player for Liverpool, so that Dirk Kuyt can push up front in the absence of Torres. Has not proved to be too much of a force so far, but he has ample time to do so.

ROBINHO

From: Man City

To: Santos

Fee: Loan

Intelligent move if you want more playing time and a place in the national squad so close to the World Cup. If he can do some magic in Brazil, he’ll be back in contention for a place and will be a much needed break from a not so great time in England.

ADAM JOHNSON

From: Middlesborough

To: Man City

Fee: £7 Million

Called a wonderkid by many who saw him carry Borough on his shoulders during times of need. Can be a big success if he plies his trade well at Eastlands.

robbie_keaneROBBIE KEANE

From: Tottenham

To: Celtic

Fee: Loan

I believe he is a simply world class player who has had 2 unlucky seasons, one of them because of some unbelievable tactics from Mr. Benitez! Back at Tottenham but not considered to be better than Defoe and Crouch, the boyhood Celtic player moves to his favourite club to prove his critics wrong.

PATRICK VIEIRA

From: Inter Milan

To: Man City

Fee: Undisclosed

Unbelievable experience in the Premiership. It is still a mystery whether this one is a loan or a pre-contract arrangement. But with Nigel De Jong having a mixed season, will be a much needed leader on the field for the Blues.

SOL CAMPBELL

From: Unattached

To: Arsenal

Fee: Free

Back to the club where he made himself known as one of the best defenders in England, Campbell will be dying to pit himself against some tough opponents whom he could not find while playing at Notts County.

STEFANO OKAKA

From: Roma

To: Fulham

Fee: Loan

Just 20 years of age but extremely talented. He is strong and pacey….a typical African striker who will add a lot of spice to Fulham’s play.
