Wenger Is Out Of Touch With Reality In The Transfer Market

Arsene Wenger

Last week's reported bid of £12 million for Phil Jagielka by the Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, just goes on to prove how out of touch with reality of the markets Wenger really is. While on one hand he doesn't want to let his prized assets leave he expects other to let rollover and let their players walk away for half their value.

The fact remains that any half decent english player is overvalued in England just because of the fact that there is such luck of quality in England in general. The sums that Liverpool and Manchester United payed for the likes of Jordan Henderson and Phil Jones respectively just reassert the realities of the market.

In the last couple of seasons Wenger has reportedly tried to sign established from the Premier League but has always failed, simply because he has failed to come up with money. I agree with his philosophy of not spending over-inflated prices but the players that he has been reported to miss out on due to his hesitancy to spend money have costed him dear.

An example is the case when the whole world was telling Wenger last season to buy a goalkeeper and he had reportedly made bids for Shay Given and Mark Schwarzer but eventually didn't buy them. Both the keepers were seasoned professional and would have easily fitted in the much required stable hands role that Arsenal badly needed and it's needless to remind Arsenal fans how their season melted away and which part of the pitch the Gunners looked the most vulnerable.

The fact that Arsene Wenger has given out signals that he is open to a number of possible summer sigings should give hope to the Emirates faithful.

Your article is nonsense...

PJ of Everton is not worth 12M, period. What Liverpool and Manure paid for jones and Henderson was obscene. I would not let Henderson clean the boots of the wide players at Arsenal (Walcott / Arshavin / Gervinho / Nasri and even Vela).
Steve Bruce must have laughed all the way to the bank with that one...

Isn't it about time the doubters got of the "smash Arsene train" and concentrated on there reality and the here an now?

I agree he needs to undertstand that if you want a player you need to come up with what is being offered. Take Vermalen, £10M. Much Much Much better than Cahill, Samba, and Jags. now tell me that Arsen should buckle and pay over inflated prices for players that are not that good.

Dear Daniel,

I don't want Wenger to pay inflated prices but when you target players that are best suited for your needs then you pay the price for them else don't make the approach public in the first place! I don't rate Henderson and Jones as worth 20 million each. It's cruel waste of money, but atleast Wenger can buy continental players of good pedigree. Why doesn't he spend some money and get a good defender??

Hey Asif,
Its not that Wenger doesnt want a defender.... its just that he wants one who is available at a reasonable price. Lets not forget that Arsenal's style of football makes them more vulnerable at the back than Man Utd, Man City or Chelsea.... Gibbs, Djourou, Kochielny, Eboue, Fabianski are much better then we think they are.... Gunners need just one more CB & Wenger is trying to get the best price out of one of Samba, Cahill & Jagielka
